kVAh formula — how to convert kWh to kVAh (and why it affects your bill)

Tariffs & billing · 6 min read · Updated 2026-04-21
TL;DR

A common approximation is kVAh = kWh ÷ PF. If PF is 0.8, billed kVAh becomes 1.25× kWh. Improving PF (APFC capacitors + monitoring) reduces the gap and the effective bill.

The kVAh formula (simple version)

For most operational estimation: kVAh = kWh ÷ PF.

At PF=1.0, kVAh=kWh. At PF=0.9, kVAh is ~11% higher. At PF=0.8, kVAh is ~25% higher.

Why DISCOMs bill in kVAh

Low PF increases current for the same useful kW, loading cables, transformers and switchgear. kVAh billing makes the network cost visible, so consumers maintain PF.

How to reduce kVAh billed units

  • Measure PF at the main incomer with a three-phase meter (kWh, kVAh, kVArh, PF).
  • Install or tune an APFC/PFC panel; use detuned filters if VFD/harmonics exist.
  • Fix phase imbalance and oversized/idling motors.

Frequently asked questions

Is kVAh formula always accurate?

It’s a practical approximation. Actual meters integrate apparent power over time; PF varies by load, so monthly kVAh differs slightly. For bill planning and PF optimisation, the formula is useful.

Does kVAh billing apply to homes?

Typically no. Residential tariffs are usually kWh-based. kVAh billing is common for commercial and industrial connections.

What PF should I target to avoid penalties?

Most Indian tariffs aim for PF ≥ 0.95. Penalties often start below 0.90. Check your state tariff schedule.
